WA shooter Anton Zappelli has won a silver medal at the 2018
World Shooting Para Sport Championships in Korea.
The Rio 2016 Paralympic team member competed for Australia
in the R3 10m Air Rifle Prone Mixed SH1 along with Natalie Smith and Glen
McMurtrie with the team finishing in second place.
Their combined effort of 1891.9 was just enough to sneak
ahead of Slovakia in third, with an advantage of just .2 of a point.
In an impressive campaign, Zappelli also qualified for the individual
10m Air Rifle Prone final, finishing in eighth place overall.
The broader significance of Australian shooting team’s
performances in Korea is that the nation has secured a quota position for the
2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
In Rio, Australia sent a team of six athletes and they will
be aiming to add further quota positions at future international shooting meets.
Before becoming an international shooter, Zappelli enjoyed a
five-year spell as a roadie for the award winning WA band The Waifs. He has also featured in an award winning documentary
titled The Ride, which saw he and
other persons injured in road crashes embark on a 5,000km road trip by quad bike
– visiting the scene of their life-changing accidents.
