Lauren Reynolds' campaign at the 2018 BMX World Championships in Baku ended early after a crash in the quarter finals saw her miss out on advancing through.
The dual Olympian came unstuck over the first jump of her quarter final race, which prevented her from registering a further career World Championships finals appearance.
Reynolds has medalled at World Championship level in the past, in addition to competing at the London and Rio Olympic Games, but such is the roll-of-the-dice nature of the sport, crashes can and do frequently occur.
The elite women’s title went to London 2012 bronze medallist Laura Smulders, who led a Netherlands clean-sweep of the podium, with Merel Smulders and Judy Baauw taking the minor places.
Emerging Australian talent Saya Sakakibara qualified for the final but was similarly thwarted by a crash, eventually finishing in sixth place.
