Allana Slater started gymnastics aged just 16 months to improve her health. She never looked back.
By age 6, she was training with the WA Institute of Sport. She represented WA between the ages 10-20, winning numerous national medals, including Australian senior champion three times (2000-03-04).
At age 12 she made her international debut. Over the next 8 years she competed in 43 events, including two Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games and four World Championships, collecting more than 60 medals.
Allana made her major international debut at the 1999 World Championships in Tianjin, where she placed 9th All Around – the first Australian to achieve a top 10 ranking.
At the 2001 Worlds, Allana went close to achieving Australia’s first World Championship medal, with a 4th on Floor by just 0.038 of a point, however her highlight was at the 2003 Worlds when she was captain of the Australian team which made history by winning the Bronze team medal.
At World Cup events, Allana won nine medals between 2000-2003. She was the first Australian to capture gold, winning Bars at the 2000 DTB Cup in Germany, later also winning gold on Floor at the 2002 Cottbus Turner de Meister.
Three Commonwealth Games gold medals, four silver and one bronze made Allana the most successful WA Commonwealth Games athlete from all sports. A member of the first Australian gymnastics team to win Commonwealth Gold (Kuala Lumpur 1998), she repeated the feat in 2002 in Manchester, also adding a Vault gold to her tally.
Allana was a dual Olympian (2000, 2004), placing 16th AA in Sydney, bettering that to 10th AA in Athens, also achieving 8th on Beam.
Allana won numerous awards including Australian Female Gymnast of the Year four times, WA Junior Sports Star of the Year four times, 2000 WA Young Australian of the Year (sports category), 2002 Sportswoman of the Year and twice Junior Sportswoman of the year.
