Australia has moved into the quarterfinals of the FINA Women’s Junior World Championships in Trieste, Italy after accounting for Uzbekistan 17-5 in the qualifying round led by a superb five goal effort from WAIS-AIS athlete Zoe Arancini.

Arancini’s five goals, was ably assisted by Genevieve Venosta (three goals) and fellow WAIS scholarship holder Eleisha Browne (2), as the Australians overcame a slow start to completely outplay their less experienced opponents.

The Australians will now play European powerhouse Greece for a place in the semi finals at 2.15am (AEST) on Friday.

Australian head coach Peter Szilagyi (WAIS women’s head coach) said his team was headed for a good tournament result.

“Our start was not as good I expected today but within few minutes the girls switched on,” Szilagyi said.

“I am pleased to be in the top eight but it is not our final destination.”

South Australian Isobel Bishop said the game against Uzbekistan allowed the team to prepare for the do or die clash with the Greeks.

“Today was a good win despite the slow start but it allowed us to practice tactics for the imperative game ahead,” Bishop said.

In a good sign for the match against Greece, Szilagyi was able to rest two of his more experienced players, captain and goalkeeper Kelsey Wakefield and strike weapon Ash Southern, during the Uzbekistan game.
