WAIS is home to hundreds of athletes all hailing from different walks of life. In our second installment for July, we introduce you to skeleton athlete Dean Timmings who is aiming to compete for Australia at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Korea.

Sport: Skeleton

When did you first start participating in your sport?

2012

What is your favourite thing about your sport?

I love the speed and the adrenaline. I also love being able to travel the world and visit very unique places whilst also meeting new people from all over the world.

Biggest sporting achievement to date?

World Championships representation in 2016 and 2017 and also performing a “Shake and Bake” with my brother before one of my skeleton runs (Talladega nights).

What is your ultimate sporting goal?

To represent Australia at the Winter Olympics.

What keeps you busy when you’re not at training?

I have a degree in Sports Management and Marketing and would one day love to follow my uncle’s footsteps and become a general manager at a professional sporting club. But for now, I work at Venues West in the venue operations department.

What is your biggest non-sporting achievement to date?

I once fell asleep standing up which I thought was pretty impressive.

Do you have any other hobbies outside of your sport and work?

  • I love soccer so whenever I get the chance I enjoy kicking the ball around and watching local and international matches.
  • I love to travel and visit new places.
  • I enjoy eating and going to get coffee with my friends.
  • Love relaxing and watching movies.
  • Playing poker with the guys.
