Athlete in Focus: Matt Wearn
WAIS is home to hundreds of athletes all hailing from different walks of life. This month we catch up with sailor and recent World Championship medallist Matt Wearn to gain an insight into his sporting journey to date.
Sport: Sailing
When did you first start participating in your sport?
When I was seven-years-old.
What is your favourite thing about your sport?
That no day is the same for us. Our racing conditions are changing constantly and it takes a master of every condition to win events.
What is your biggest sporting achievement to date?
Becoming world number one in the Laser class.
What is your ultimate sporting goal?
To win gold at the Olympic Games.
What keeps you ticking outside of competition?
I do online learning courses to help me increase knowledge for my sailing and for my future endeavours.
What is your biggest non-sporting achievement to date?
Graduating High School.
Do you have any other hobbies outside of your sport and work?

What is an interesting fact about you that not many people know?
I played AFL until I was 16 when my team finished runners-up in the Under 16’s Grand Final.
