Aussie Juniors Face Knockout Clash with Spain

The Australian women’s junior water polo team will play Spain in its quarter-final cross-over after finishing the group stage with one win and two defeats.

The Aussies have been competitive in all three completed fixtures at the Junior World Championships in Portugal and will remain confident that they can have an impact on the tournament in the knockout rounds.

The team went down to Hungary 10-9 in their first match, but responded well in match two, with an 11-10 win over Japan before suffering another one-goal loss in their most recent clash with the USA (9-8).

Up next is a clash against a powerful Spanish outfit on Friday morning Perth time, with head coach Georgina Kovacs issuing as a challenge for the squad.

“It’s just about reassuring the girls that we definitely have something to offer, recapping our past performances and then moving on to focus on our next game,” Kovacs said.

WA talent Jamie Oberman – who is coached by Kovacs as a member of the WAIS training squad – said the team had fought hard in their match against the USA.

“I was really pleased with the continuous effort showed by the girls. Even though we were tired, we kept up our intensity and kept pushing really hard,” she said.

WA is also being represented by Claire Durston.
