Aussie Juniors Undefeated Heading into Preliminary Final
The Australian women’s junior water polo team remain undefeated after three matches at the Junior World Championships in Serbia.
The Aussies kicked off their campaign in brilliant fashion, registering a comprehensive 18-5 win over Kazakhstan.
The girls delivered more of the same in their second clash, this time against South American opponents – Brazil.
Australia won each quarter to secure a 15-6 win over the Brazilians, which included a goal to WA product Jamie Oberman – the daughter of WAIS men’s coach Paul Oberman.
The Aussies faced an altogether more difficult match-up in their third and final group match, a 9-9 draw with European power Greece.
A topsy-turvy contest saw both teams wrestle the ascendency at different stages, but it was a late goal to Australia that secured a share of the points.
They will next face Canada in a preliminary final, after the Aussies finished second in their pool.
In other water polo news, Lilian Hedges and Zoe Arancini have earned selection for the Australian women’s squad for the up-coming FINA Water Polo World Cup.
The World Cup begins in Surgut, Russia next week. Australia have been drawn with Russia, Spain and China.
