The Aussie Sharks captained by WA superstar Aaron Younger have made history with the Aussie Sharks beating Croatia at an Olympic Games for the first time.

After surrendering a late lead in their first game, the Aussie men’s water polo including WA players Younger, Andrew Ford, George Ford and Tim Putt were determined not to make the same mistake.

After leading by up to four goals throughout the game they held just a one goal advantage at the start of the final quarter. Despite the pressure from the world’s number three ranked team they produced a technical display and held off every attempt to overturn the deficit.

“It is definitely great after the first game we were a bit disappointed. We started really well and ended not so well but it was great for the boys to bounce back,” said Younger.

“It definitely helps a lot,” he added of the motivation from the results following the first game loss. “It puts us back in the game we definitely have the hardest group here so now that we are up in the mix it gives the boys a lot of motivation going in to the next game against Serbia that we can actually play against these bigger teams.

“The focus the whole game was just on defense, after the first game we let it slide in defense so that was the main focus and just playing off that.”

The Aussie Sharks play Serbia in their next pool match on Thursday at 6:50PM Perth time.
