Aussies Finish Junior Worlds with Big Win
The Australian women’s junior water polo team has finished
its world championships campaign in Portugal with a comprehensive victory over
Canada in the 9th/10th playoff.
In their last match for the tournament, the young Aussies
produced their most dynamic performance throughout to register a 14-5 win.
Australia outscored Canada in all four quarters and were
too strong at both ends of the pool, sewing up ninth place and ensuring they head
home on a high.
Jamie Oberman was named match MVP which included a
goal, and she was joined in action by fellow Western Australians Claire
Durston and Glenda Morgan.
In representing her country, Oberman is emulating the
achievements of her father Paul and her uncle Mark – both of whom competed at
Olympic level for Australia, which including playing on the same team together at
the Barcelona Games in 1992.
Head coach Georgina Kovacs said she was extremely
proud of her team for maintaining their standards and work-rate to the end.
“I’m really glad the girls were able to put out
their best performance today, it really showed the difference between the two
teams,” Kovacs said.
