Australia has played out a thrilling 9-all draw with Hungary on the opening day of the FINA Women’s Junior World Championships in Trieste, Italy.
Australia jumped out to an early lead and remained in front on the scoreboard until midway through the third period before Hungary took control, forcing the Australians to win the last quarter to snatch the draw.
Led by three goals from star attacker Ash Southern and a brace to WAIS-AIS athlete Zoe Arancini, the Australians refused to give in to their European rivals, remaining sturdy in defence when it counted, something that delighted coach Peter Szilagyi.
“It was a really physical game as we expected,” said Szilagyi, who also oversees the WAIS women’s water polo program.
“We started very well and led the game for two and half quarters but within four minutes Hungary turned it around to be two goals ahead.”
“But we kept working until the last second to win. I am pleased with our defence but we need to improve our offense as many of their goals came from our missed opportunities.”
Kelsey Wakefield, Australia’s captain, said the result left the team with mixed emotions.
“It was disappointing to draw after our really great start but our desperation in defence in the last period was excellent,” she said.
