Australia’s synchronised swimming team has closed competition at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest with an impressive performance in the Team Free discipline.
The Australian team featured WA Olympians Danielle Kettlewell and Amie Thompson, along with fellow local talent Jane Fruzynski and they managed to post a competitive total of 76.0333 for 18th ranking overall.
The score was an improvement upon their earlier Team Technical performance, where Australia attracted 72.6056 points for 20th place.
Scoring in synchronised swimming alters slightly between Free and Technical, but essentially rewards execution of artistic and technical elements combined with the set level of difficulty to return a total score.
Australia did not qualify for the final of either discipline – with only the top 12 nations progressing – but did perform admirably on the global stage with a young squad, featuring several world championship debutants.
Russia reinforced its standing as the world’s premier synchronised swimming nation, winning the Team Technical gold medal (96.0109) ahead of China (94.2165). Russia will also head into Friday’s Team Free final as highest qualifier, once again clear of China in second spot.
The FINA World Championships run through to July 30, more information and scores can be viewed via the official website.
*The Australian squad also included WA athlete Kazia Zenke, who was a reserve for both events.
