Ryan Bayley has just missed out on a medal in his first ride of the Olympic cycling competition, finishing fourth in the team sprint on Friday night.

In the only gold medal decided on the first night of competition at the Laoshan Velodrome the Australians finished behind Great Britain, France and Germany.

West Australian Bayley didn’t ride in the qualifying rounds, with Australia fielding Daniel Ellis, Mark French and Shane Kelly as they qualified in fifth place.

Bayley came into the team for Kelly in the first round and it brought the desired result, with Australia knocking out The Netherlands, featuring Bayley’s arch rival Theo Bos, by posting 44.090 seconds compared to 44.212 seconds.

Australia’s time qualified them for the ride for bronze and they lead on the first two laps before Germany pipped them by a mere 0.008 of a second on the line.

Bayley’s next ride is in the Keirin on Saturday.
