Brianna Throssell becomes third West Australian to win three medals at the one Games
Brianna Throssell is bringing home the equal largest medal haul of any Western Australian from the one games, winning gold and two bronze in swimming relays at the Tokyo Games.
After competing in the 100m and 200m butterfly in the opening days, the 25-year-old turned her attention to the relay events that have seen her earn World Championship and Commonwealth Games medals.
Throssell’s first medal came in the women’s 4x200m freestyle where she lined up in the heat alongside fellow Western Australian Tamsin Cook and Meg Harris and Mollie O’Callaghan. In the final Australia improved on their own world record to finish third behind China and the United States.
A second bronze medal followed after a 100m fly swim in the newly introduced mixed 4x100m medley relay.
The biggest prize of all came in the penultimate event of the competition. Again swimming the 100m butterfly in the heat Throssell’s relay expertise helped Australia qualify in to the final. A stunning performance by Cate Campbell in the freestyle, saw Australia narrowly edge the United States to take gold.
Fellow swimmer Eamon Sullivan claimed two silver and a bronze from the 2008 Beijing Games and Shirley Strickland won silver and two bronze in 1948.
