Kiel Brown will compete in his first Commonwealth Games campaign

Western Australian Institute of Sport hockey athlete Kiel Brown has been named as an injury replacement for Jeremy Hayward in the Kookaburras’ squad for this month’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) approved the change to the Australian men’s hockey team after defender Jeremy Hayward (Darwin, NT), 21, was forced to withdraw from the squad after suffering a stress reaction in his right foot.

Brown, originally from Toowoomba and the brother of Hockeyroos Olympian Hope Munro has been drafted in, and will add great experience to the squad, having represented Australia at Olympic, World Cup and Champions Trophy level.

Despite Brown’s 145 games and extensive experience for Australia, Glasgow will be the 30 year-olds’ first Commonwealth Games. An experienced defender, he won an Olympic bronze medal in 2008 in Beijing and World Cup gold in 2010.

He was a reserve for the London 2012 Olympic Games and most recently was a member of the Australian squad at the World League Finals in Delhi in January.

The Australian men begin their Commonwealth Games gold medal defence against Wales at 9:00 Perth time on Saturday, 26 July. The team depart for Glasgow on Saturday, 19 July.
