Yesterday Hockey Australia announced the Men’s Junior World Cup Team, including two WAIS athletes, who will travel to Lucknow, India to compete in the 16-team competition.

Western Australia’s Matthew Bird and Frazer Gerrard were both selected following their strong performances in the recent Sultan of Johor Cup.

The 18-person squad will begin competition at the World Cup in Pool A, taking on Argentina, Austria and Korea to determine who goes through to the quarter finals.

Following their recent win at the Sultan of Johor Cup, the Australian side will once again be looking to bring home the trophy.

With a list of players including Kookaburras Blake Govers, Josh Beltz and Tom Craig, alongside several National Junior Squad members, the side are in a good position to succeed.

National Junior coach Ben Bishop said “the selection of the squad for the 2016 Junior World Cup was extremely difficult. We have a very talented junior group who recently won the Sultan of Johor Cup, so to cut numbers down to 18 was a hard task.”

‘We have selected a group who we believe will give us every chance of success at the junior World Cup, and we are now focused on doing everything we can to make sure we’re in top form for the competition.”

The side will travel to India in early December in preparation for their first game against Korea on December 9.
