Cousins Earn Selection for Youth World Champs

WA will be represented at the 2018 Youth World Championships by cousins Matthew and Jamie Oberman.

The local talents represent a second generation of Obermans in the green and gold, with the 17 year-olds following in the footsteps of their fathers Mark Oberman (Matthew’s father) and Paul Oberman (Jamie’s father).

The Oberman* brothers played together in the same Australian Sharks team at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.

Paul now heads up the WAIS men’s water polo program in Mt Claremont and has overseen his nephew’s development within the high performance structure since Matthew commenced scholarship in 2017.

Water Polo Australia this week finalised squads for both its men’s and women’s teams which are set to contest next month’s global age championships.

The men will compete in the Hungarian city of Szombothely whilst the women will compete in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.

In Hungary, the Australian men have been drawn in Group A alongside Egypt, South Africa, Brazil and Montenegro. In Serbia, the women have been grouped with Uzbekistan, Greece and Brazil.

Matthew and Jamie Oberman are both members of the Triton Water Polo Club. They are the only WA representatives within their respective 13-member national squads.

*Mark is a dual Olympian having also represented at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
