The Western Australian Institute of Sport is pleased to announce the appointment of Matt Crampton as Head Coach of the WAIS Cycling Program.

The former Team GB and Sky Track Racing sprinter will commence duties at WAIS next February and will focus on honing the pathway development of WA’s elite junior track and road talent.

Crampton was a regular visitor to Perth as a member of the Sky Track program over the course of his competitive career and he said the chance to relocate to WA and build on the strong existing cycling culture was an opportunity he was relishing.

“I have fond memories of training camps in Perth and always dreamed of coming back here.”

“I see the role at WAIS as a huge opportunity to grow, adapt and learn. Western Australia looks to have a thriving cycling scene with a rich history that I very much want to continue to grow,” he said.

A medallist at Commonwealth Games and Track World Cup levels, Crampton was a member of the GB track program during an unprecedented period of success. He said training and competing within an environment that included athletes the calibre of Sir Chris Hoy had provided him with a unique understanding of what it takes to build success.

“I was hugely fortunate to be part of one of the most successful cycling teams in history. I have grown up with it, lived through the day to day athlete lifestyle, struggled and succeeded with it.

“I was an athlete in the early talent development initiatives and saw its evolutions over the years, and later as a part of a Podium Squad competing at the highest level.

“I hope to draw from a mixture of my experiences from starting out and learning about the sport to the honing of every last one percent to be competitive at the World level. I believe I can bring a great deal of practical experience to the role along with an understanding of what it takes to develop and win,” he said.

The 32 year-old said he was looking forward to working within the WAIS high performance environment that provides athletes with a range of coaching and sport servicing support.

“I am firm believer in collaboration for success, being open and connecting ideas.

“As an athlete I could see that there was so much involved behind the scenes in any performance that it was rarely just a single or two dimensional approach.

“It is important for a high performance culture to join highly skilled people together as a recipe for sustained success,” Crampton said.

WAIS Performance Team Director Jo Richards said Crampton’s appointment would bring a new and modern perspective to the WAIS Cycling Program.

“Matt brings to WAIS a contemporary coaching style with first-hand knowledge of ‘world’s best’ athlete developmental systems.

“Being a former high performance athlete, his understanding of the journey ahead for our young athletes will be of enormous benefit to all at WAIS.

“Bringing a British flavour to our coaching staff at WAIS will provide us exposure to an alternative perspective and an opportunity to further enhance our innovative coaching practices,” Richards said.

Richards also thanked interim coach Andrew Jackson for providing high quality leadership of the WAIS program during the period of transition.

“We are very fortunate to have had someone of Andrew’s skill and knowledge leading the program in recent months. He played a significant role in preparing Tyler Lindorff for this year’s Road World Championships and he has been a valued support to the broader cycling network at this time.”

“We’re pleased that Andrew will stay on with us until next year’s Track Nationals which will provide Matt with the best opportunity to successfully integrate into this role,” Richards said.
