Tasmania proved a happy hunting ground for the WAIS Para-Triathlon athletes contesting the Devonport Triathlon last weekend.

Brant Garvey claimed victory in the men’s PT2, World Champion Sally Pilbeam won the women’s PT3 and Clare McLean was second in the women’s PT4.

With Paralympic qualification quota points on offer for the classes set to be contested for the first time at this year’s Rio Games, the Devonport Triathlon took on even greater significance than usual.

Garvey earned line honours in the PT2 with an overall time of 1:15:42. He was out of the water in 11:29mins before completing the cycling leg in 35:30, before stopping the clock with a closing run of 27:42.

Pilbeam won the PT3 in 1:21:30, posting 14:31mins in the swim, 40:54 in the cycling and coming home in 26:05 in the run.

McLean was second behind Kate Doughty in the PT4, with her time of 1:15:21 consisting of a 16:29min swim, 35:06 cycle and 23:46 run.

Garvey earned his race win despite a 10 second penalty for a transition indiscretion. The Trigg resident however, saw the funny side of the incident post-race as he updated his followers via social media.

“So stoked to get the win yesterday with a 10 second penalty for not being tidy in transition. My wife said she wasn’t surprised, but I’m not sure why?” it read in part.

Sally Pilbeam also updated followers on social media as she gears up to defend her world title.

“Proud to get the win today against quality competition in the lead-up the World Champs in Rotterdam in July,” she said.
