Georgia Wilson and Karri Somerville selected in Hockeyroos 2020 squad
Georgia Wilson and Karri Somerville have been announced as part of the 27-member 2020 Hockeyroos squad.
A member of the Hockeyroos since 2017, Mahogany Creek’s Georgia Wilson has been selected for a third year as she eyes a maiden Olympic Games. After spending much of 2018 on the sidelines as she recovered from a torn ACL, she returned to competition in the FIH Pro League earlier this year.
20-year-old Karri Somerville continues her rise to the top of the sport earning Hockeyroos selection for the first time. Having made her Australian hockey debut for with The Jillaroos at the 2016 Junior World Cup, where Australia claimed bronze.
A torn ACL followed by an meniscus tear after her return kept her off the field for much for much of the year between 2018 and mid 2019. Somerville’s move to the Hockeyroos squad follows an impressive Sultana Bran Hockey One season, where her appearances for the the Perth Thundersticks caught the eye of national selectors.
“Karri had an excellent Hockey One season. She played at half back and was very dynamic getting up and back down the pitch,” said Hockeyroos Head Coach Paul Gaudoin.
“She’s a tall, mobile defender who is pretty quick off the mark and having someone with a bit of speed in our defensive group is going to be handy.
“She’s also got a developing drag flick and it’s pleasing to see that you can go from being a youthful player to a more experienced player and have the opportunity to come into the squad.”
