Germany Put Hockeyroos to the Sword

Despite scoring in the first minute of the match, the Hockeyroos have been overwhelmed by Germany during the first of their two test series overnight in Germany.

Coming off some good performances against Great Britain last week, the Hockeyroos made the best possible start when veteran Nicole Arrold converted a penalty corner in the opening 30 seconds of the match to give Australia an early lead.

Things continued to improve for the Hockeyroos when striker Megan Rivers scored Australia’s second goal at the 19 minute mark, shocking the local German crowd.

However from that moment on it was all Germany, with Lydia Haase making an immediate reply only a minute later to bring the home team back in to the game.

In a disastrous period for the Hockeyroos the half time break could not come soon enough, with Germany scoring three more goals in just over 10 minutes to take a commanding 4-2 half time lead.

Australia’s young defence continued to be under pressure after half time, conceding two more goals to allow Germany to finish 6-2 winners.

The Hockeyroos will have their chance for revenge when they play Germany again on Thursday 24 June before remaining in Germany to compete in a 4 nations tournament against Germany, Ireland and India.
