Perth Glory became the first side to record back-to-back wins in the 2014 W-League season, after defeating the Newcastle Jets 2-1 at Magic Park last weekend.
Following one goal wins in the opening round of competition, both sides began the match unchanged.
Perth created the first chance of the match in the 10thminute, as WAIS athlete Katie Gill headed a loose ball towards goal, which came crashing back off the crossbar. Gill came into the match off the back of two goals in the Glory’s opening season win over Brisbane.
Newcastle’s Emily van Egmond was looking extremely dangerous in the front third, creating two chances for Tara Andrews and heading just wide of the right post twice in the opening quarter of an hour.
The first shot on target came from Perth’s WAIS scholarship holder Samantha Kerr in the 21stminute and was blocked by the Jets defence, a clear indication of how well both sides were defending.
The first goal of the match came in the 34thminute as Marianna Tabain converted a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box, given away by Newcastle’s Hayley Crawford. Alanna Kennedy then doubled the away side’s lead during added on time, sending the Glory into the break ahead 2-0.
Two minutes after the hour mark the Jets got themselves on the score sheet, with Tara Andrews slotting home from close range after a well-worked corner routine.
Kerr thought she had restored Perth’s two goal advantage, after heading past Coelho in the 65thminute. However, referee Kelly Jones ruled that Coelho had been fouled in the process. Ten minutes later the Jets experienced the same fate, as Victoria Huster volleyed home from close range only to be ruled offside.
In the 80thminute Glory substitute Gabrielle Marzano left the crossbar shaking as she struck a venomous left foot strike towards goal that went crashing off the woodwork.
Coelho produced a number of crucial saves to keep Newcastle in the game, however they could not get the job done at the other end, and Glory held on to pick up the three points.
In round three, Perth will look to continue their hot run against Adelaide at home. The match kicks off on Saturday at 3.00pm.
