It was recently announced that the Gold Coast has been selected to host the 2017 Men’s Water Polo World league Intercontinental Tournament.

The tournament will be played at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre which will also be one of the competition venues for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Running from the 25th to the 30th of April the Intercontinental Tournament will feature a number of the world’s best non-European water polo teams.

The teams scheduled to compete are Australia, China, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand and the United State of America.

Head Coach of the Australian Men’s Water Polo team, Elvis Fatovic said he’s excited for the competition to take place on home soil.

“The international tournament provides a great opportunity to showcase the sport on Australian soil and will mark the official start of the Aussie Sharks Tokyo campaign,” said Fatovic.

With many nations now entering preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, this tournament will provide countries with the opportunity to give younger players experience at the international level.

In addition to this the tournament is also expected to generate exposure for the sport amongst the general public.

The Australian Team will come together for a week long training camp on the Gold Coast in the lead up to the competition.

Within this, three days will include training alongside the USA team.
