Following the Hockeyroos’ recent qualification, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has today announced the pools for the BDO FIH Women’s World Cup, to be played in Rosario, Argentina from 29 August-11 September 2010.
The Hockeyroos have been grouped in Pool A along with the Netherlands (world rank 1), Germany (4), Japan (8), New Zealand (9) and India (13).
Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray says he is expecting some tough competition at the World Cup.
“It is going to be a tight contest with three or four teams in each pool capable of making the finals – Australia is one of these,” said Murray.
The Hockeyroos have won two World Cup titles in their history (1994, 1998), and finished in second place at the last World Cup in 2006.
The Hockeyroos will have a full schedule in the lead up to the World Cup, with the Women’s Australian Hockey League beginning this weekend. At the conclusion of the AHL, the Hockeyroos will travel to Europe and play a series of matches with Great Britain, Germany, Ireland and India They will then return to Australia and have six weeks to prepare for the World Cup at the Australian Institute of Sport Hockey Unit in Perth.
