Hockeyroos qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games
The Hockeyroos have earned a spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, securing their appearance at an 11th consecutive Olympic Games, following a 2-0 series win over Russia over the weekend in Perth.
After missing out on directly qualifying for Tokyo with a narrow loss to New Zealand at the Oceania Cup in September, The Hockeyroos faced Russia in a do-or-die two game series with the winner booking a spot for Tokyo.
In the opening game on Friday the Hockeyroos faced a strong Russian lineup at Perth Hockey Stadium, with the 18th ranked nation twice equalising the score putting the home team under pressure. A calm and collected Hockeyroos lineup came home strongly for a 4-2 victory, giving them a foot in the door.
With confidence in the team the Hockeyroos started strongly in the final game on Saturday as they quickly put on five goals in the opening 30 minutes of the match. The Russian’s were unable to respond with the 5-0 score holding to the final siren.
West Australia’s Georgia Wilson, a late addition to the team had a rare opportunity to play in front of a home crowd as she continues her return from a torn ACL, that kept her out for much of the last season.
The win sees the Hockeyroos join the Kookaburras for next year’s Olympics.
