The Hockeyroos let slip a two goal lead to draw with Argentina in their second match of the Spar Cup in South Africa.

The 2-2 draw was an entertaining contest between two quick sides that enjoyed moving the ball from the backline into attack.

Australia made a frenetic start taking the lead through Casey Eastham – making her 50th appearance for the Hockeyroos – in just the second minute, before Kate Hollywood added a second in the 12th minute.

The Australians missed several more good scoring opportunities, and whether complacency or momentum set in or went, Argentina stormed back into the match through goals to Sruoga (20th minute) and Rebecchi (25th minute) to tie the match at 2-2.

The Argentines continued to press in the second half, with a series of circle penetrations and attempts on goal, but the Hockeyroos’ defence held strong, leaving the likelihood that both teams could meet in the weekend final, should both sides win their remaining match.

WAIS scholarship holders Kobie McGurk, Kim Walker and Hope Munro are all part of the squad in South Africa, with McGurk and Walker listed among Australia’s best against Argentina.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray was left frustrated that his side hadn’t capitalized on its early advantage against the world’s second ranked side.

“We were overrun by a fit and skilful Argentinean team. After a promising first 20 minutes when we built a two goal lead and squandered several more opportunities, they were presented with some sloppy work in deep defence. It was great to see Casey Eastham play her 50th game for Australia,” Murray said.

The Hockeyroos next match is against hosts South Africa.
