Hockeyroos Thrash Korea 5-0

The Hockeyroos turned around their poor performance in the first test against World Number eight, Korea with a 5-0 drubbing in the second of four matches at Shenton Park in Perth.

The match began at a frantic pace with the Hockeyroos getting off to an ideal start with a field goal to Casey Eastham in the fifth minute of the match, via a brilliant cross from young gun Emily Smith.

Hockeyroos Head Coach Adam Commens said “It was a much improved performance on yesterday. We created a lot of chances today and the result was justified.”

Megan Rivers and Georgia Nanscawen both played key offensive roles in the first half, proving a handful for the Korean defenders. The resultant forward pressure forced a second goal for the Hockeyroos through Georgie Parker in the 35th minute.

Hockeyroos defenders Anna Flanagan and AIS-WAIS athlete Kobie McGurk combined well in the back, repelling a number of solid attacks from Korea. Head Coach Adam Commens said “Defensively we provided ourselves with a far better platform to springboard our attack.”

Eastham continued her excellent 2012 form with a second goal in the 48th minute before the floodgates opened for the Hockeyroos with Emily Smith then AIS-WAIS athlete Fiona Boyce capitalising on opportunities for a 5-0 score line that would stand until the final siren sounded.

Australia A again proved too strong for Korean Club team, Korea Telecom in the curtain raiser at Shenton Park. The 3-1 victory to Australia A indicates the great depth of the women’s program. Hockeyroos National Squad player Emily Hurtz snared a double in the first half and 2011 Hockeyroos National squad player Holly Webster scoring the third goal late in the match.

A rest day today allows the players to freshen up and prepare for Friday night’s match at the Perth Hockey Stadium at 6pm.
