Intercontinental Cup Squads Confirmed
Six locals will help Australia into battle when the FINA World League Intercontinental Cup commences in Perth this week.
Both Sharks and Stingers squads will boast three Western Australian talents apiece as the men’s and women’s national teams attempt qualification for the World League Super Final in June.
Brothers George and Andrew Ford will be in action for the Sharks, where they will be joined by fellow WA athlete Tim Putt. All three were members of the national team at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest.
The women’s’ team includes Olympian Zoe Arancini, goal keeper Lilian Hedges and Italian club-based athlete Jessica Zimmerman.
WPA High Performance Manager Aleksandr Osadchuk said the Aussies have an important task ahead of them.
“Our teams will be aiming to qualify for the FINA World League Super Final and we also have the FINA World Championships to prepare for,” Osadchuk said.
The tournament is also an important step on the path to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
“There’s a lot at stake at this event as it also forms part of our Olympic pre-qualification.
“We are pleased that a number of Australia’s international players were able to make themselves available for the tournament and we expect both the Sharks and Stingers to be competitive throughout the week.
“Equally great is the number of emerging players who get an opportunity to get international playing experience.
“We’re looking forward to a tough week of competition against some of the world’s best water polo teams and we encourage everyone to come along and support our athletes.
Perth has a proud water polo history and is a great host city,” Osadchuk said.
Along with Australia, teams that will compete at the FINA World League Inter-Continental Cup include USA, New Zealand, Japan, China, Kazakhstan, South Africa,Canada and Argentina.
The FINA World League Inter-Continental Cup, featuring men’s and women’s events, will be held at HBF stadium from 26-31 March.
