WAIS scholarship holders Jamie Oberman, Luci Marsh and Philippa Pedley have been selected in Water Polo Australia’s 20&U women’s squad.

The 20&U program forms an important part of the Water Polo Australia high performance pathway, designed to prepare athletes for Australian representative opportunities. The program is designed to educate aspiring athletes about all aspects of water polo, both in and out of the pool.

The team for the 2021 FINA World Women’s Junior Water Polo Championships will be selected from the squad and will spent spend the next 12 months preparing.

“I was so stocked to find out I was in the squad. Obviously you train a long time to make your own age group team and with all the restrictions that have happened we were waiting to see if it was going to happen,” said Luci Marsh who is eyeing her first World Championships.

“It was super exciting that the squad came out and to see your name it is relief. To put purpose back in to training and I know I am in that squad and I need to be the best player I can be and training really hard is what is going to get me there to Junior Worlds.

2019 Junior World Championship representative Jamie Oberman is exciting to be selected in the squad and look to go to a second Junior Worlds in 2021.

“To me getting in to the squad is a show of all the hard work I’ve really put in over the last couple of years and all the training sessions and early mornings at WAIS are really paying off,” said Oberman, daughter of 1992 Olympian  Paul Oberman.

For Pedley, like Marsh the squad is her first selection and the culmination of three years worth of work. “It is really exciting for me as I haven’t gone to a World Champs yet but I have been in a couple of squads with Jamie and finally the hard work is paying off.

Water Polo Australia’s high performance programs play a crucial role in ensuring future success of our national teams. The 20&U also provides the ideal environment to prepare aspiring athletes looking to extend their representative honours with the Aussie Stingers and who have aspirations for the Olympics.
