Jeffery Claims National Title

WAIS athlete Robin Jeffery soared down the slalom course yesterday to win the C1 title at the Australian Championships in Penrith, NSW.

His stand out performance of 87.40 seconds was enough to edge out New South Welshman Ian Borrows for the gold, with Victorian Christian Fabris taking the bronze.

Yesterday’s heats for the C1M and K1W decided the National winners with the top 30 in each event progressing to Sunday’s semifinals of the Australian Open, although Jeffery wasn’t completely aware of this at the time.

“It was a bit strange, I thought Nationals was decided by finals but apparently it was the heats and the Aus open is finals,” explained Jeffery. “Lucky I pushed hard until the end.”

Regardless of the confusion, Jeffery said he was pleased with his mental performance.

“The gates were set in fairly straight forward positions, but that meant that any mistakes were magnified.” He explained.

“I’m really happy with my mental focus which allowed me to stay in the moment and keep the boat on track.”

In the junior C1M event Brodie Crawford lead a WA trifecta winning the gold ahead of Steven Lowther and Nicholas Rankin.

The action continues today with the K1M, C2M and C1W heats.

“I was really satisfied with my performance today,” Said Jeffery. “I’m hoping for more of the same today in the C2 with Ethan Hodson (NSW), and again on Sunday in the finals in both classes.”
