WAIS athlete Kate Denning has been involved in the Jillaroos latest three matches at the Women’s Junior World Cup in Boston, USA.
The Jillaroos produced their best match of the tournament to date, defeating Korea 4-2 in their latest hitout at the tournament. With winners all across the pitch, Jill Dwyer provided a good target at centre forward, breaking the lines and proving to be dangerous in the circle.
The Jillaroos discipline was a step up from previous matches as they maintained their structure well, resulting in Rachel Miller scoring Australia’s first goal at the seven minute mark.
The Jillaroos continued to work hard and used the wings to good effect, with Danielle Schubach and Tegan Holcroft pushing hard to keep control of the ball, with Holcroft scoring Australia’s second goal at the 33 minute mark from a penalty corner.
Determined to work themselves back into the game, Korea remained dangerous throughout the second half, with every forward movement fast and efficient.
Despite some brilliant last line defence with tackles from Heather Langham and some excellent goalkeeping from Ash Wells, Korea eventually found their first goal at the 40 minute mark.
When Kate Jenner scored two goals for the Jillaroos within three minutes the game was all but over, with a 67 minute mark field goal to Korea finishing the scoring in the match.
Emily Hurtz was clearly a target for Korea, with the Asian nation double and triple teaming her almost every time she received the ball, while Georgia Nanscawen continues to grow in confidence with every match.
The Jillaroos will next play England on Tuesday 11 August.
In the Jillaroos previous match at the 2009 Women’s Junior World Cup, they defeated Chile 1-0 over the weekend thanks to a penalty stroke conversion from Casey Eastham at the 53 minute mark.
Earlier in the tournament:
The Jillaroos produced a spectacular first half goal-fest to blow away Belarus at the Women’s Junior World Cup in Boston, USA, setting up a 7-0 victory.
The match started perfectly for the Hockeyroos, with Tegan Holcroft and Danielle Schubach scoring within the first five minutes to establish their dominance.
Full of confidence, the Jillaroos continued their all out attack on the Belarus defence, with Olympic Hockeyroo Casey Eastham putting her experience to good use by scoring two first half goals to further extend Australia’s lead.
When Kate Denning and Jill Dwyer also scored at the 16 and 32 minute mark respectively, the match already appeared out of reach for Belarus, with the Jillaroos recording 27 circle penetrations and 13 shots on goal in the first half.
Despite having all the momentum, the Jillaroos couldn’t match the intensity of the first half after half time, only scoring once via another Jill Dwyer field goal at the 45 minute mark.
In contrast, the Jillaroos were forced to fend off seven penalty corner attempts in the second half, which they did successfully.
Hannah Cohen, Bianca Greenshields, Jill Dwyer, Harriet Moore and Georgia Nanscawen were amongst the best players.
