Jillaroos Top of Pool C at Junior World Cup in Germany

The Australian Jillaroos have made a strong start to the 2013 Junior World Cup recording 6-1 and 6-0 wins over India and Russia respectively.

Kathryn Slattery is the sole Western Australian Institute of Sport representative in the women’s U21 squad for Australia, and the Como resident has found the net in both encounters.

The Jillaroos began their campaign in Monchengladbach, Germany last Saturday with a clinical 6-1 dispatch of India. The Australians hit the lead through a Slattery field goal on 17th minutes and added another five goals to overwhelm the Indian outfit, who could manage only one goal in return after 27 minutes.

Russia in the first round were comprehensively beaten (10-0) by New Zealand, and they found the going little better against the Australians, who kept a clean sheet whilst scoring six for the second time in the tournament.

A Kathryn Slattery strike after 25 minutes gave Australia a 3-0 lead in a match they dictated from start to finish.

The 6-0 win over Russia moved Australia to top position in Pool C, after India recorded a 2-0 win over New Zealand, leaving the Jillaroos as the only undefeated side in the group.

Australia plays New Zealand on Tuesday (30 July) hoping to remain undefeated which would gain a more favourable Quarter Final match. The Netherlands, Argentina and hosts Germany currently lead their respective pools with one round remaining.

Should Australia win its match with New Zealand, a clash with Spain looms most likely for the Jillaroos.
