WAIS athletes Jesse Phillips (Doubleview), Steve Bird (Doubleview) and Alana Nicholls (City Beach) have departed Perth for Europe to contest the first of three World Cups in Poznan, Poland commencing on Friday and running through to Sunday.
The triumvirate will be joined by WAIS head coach Ramon Andersson, who will form part of the Australian coaching team on the world cup tour.
Nicholls will be competing in the K1 200m and 500m and after a phenomenal summer campaign in Australia, is considered a medal prospect in both events. Phillips and Bird will join forces to race the K2 200m and 500m.
With 38 countries competing, competition will be tough but provide a good opportunity to tune up for the more important second and third World Cups later in the month.
There could be more news to celebrate for the WAIS Canoeing program this week too, with Alana Nicholls a finalist for the Athlete Career and Education Award at Friday’s WAIS Champions Breakfast at the Perth Convention Centre. Also in contention for a major award is coach Ramon Andersson, who has earned a nomination for the Coach of the Year Award.
