Canoe sprint racing will return early next month when West Lakes, South Australia hosts Grand Prix 1 (GP1) from 6-8 December.
138 athletes have entered the competition with a string of high profile senior athletes and talented U23 and junior paddlers travelling from interstate to join the strong local SASI contingent.
The 1000m events will open the program on the Friday 6th with the 500m and 200m to follow on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th respectively. Sunday afternoon will also feature the paracanoe events.
The race of the meet looks set to be the men’s and women’s open K1 200 with a strong field assembled for each event.
Leading the men’s contingent will be WAIS athlete and reigning National Champion Steve Bird as he goes head to head with fellow WAIS senior paddlers Jesse Phillips and Brodie Holmes as well as Sydney paddler Lachlan Tame.
In the women’s event WAIS athlete and 2012 London Olympian Alana Nicholls will race against Jo Brigden-Jones and Alyce Burnett with those three favoured to medal ahead of the emerging talents of Jaime Roberts (WAIS), Amy Peters, Rebecca Mann and local product Cat McArthur.
