Kookaburras Stifled by Hosts Malaysia
AIS-WAIS athlete Trent Mitton scored for the Kookaburras in a 1-1 draw with hosts Malaysia at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh.
Mitton put the reigning world champions ahead with a goal on the stroke of half time, but the Australian’s inability to convert further, despite nine penalty corners proved costly, with the hosts drawing level through a Mohd Razie Rahim penalty corner in the 69th minute.
The Kookaburras remain undefeated in the tournament, having earlier dispatched of Pakistan 6-0, and face a match on Thursday against South Korea, before completing the pool phase with a clash with regional rivals New Zealand.
Australia coach Ric Charlesworth lamented his side’s lack of conversion from the dominance shown overall, but paid respect to the Malaysian keeper S. Kumar.
“We had some 30 odd penetrations and could have scored half a dozen goals had it not been for the keeper,” Charlesworth said.
The 22ndedition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup concludes this weekend.
