Flat out: Liddelow will be keen to hit the ground running against Spain and Argentina

Four WAIS hockey athletes have been named in Hockey Australia’s squad to compete in Test matches against Spain and Argentina in October with 2008 Beijing Olympian Shelly Liddelow earning a recall.

Liddelow hasn’t featured for the Hockeyroos since their fifth placed finish in last year’s Games, but has been drafted into the national squad to add more firepower to a team that failed to earn automatic World Cup qualification, after going down to New Zealand recently.

Liddelow will be joined in the squad by fellow WAIS scholarship holders Kim Walker, Ashleigh Nelson and Fiona Boyce.

Ashleigh Nelson’s recent form drew praise from Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray after impressive displays both home and away.

“Nelson has played well ever since our tour of South Africa, with good performances at both the Champions Trophy and the recent Oceania Cup,” Murray said.

This theme of development will be evident during these matches, with Murray indicating a number of structures will be trialled.

Three test matches will take place in Terrassa, Spain, while five matches will be played in Mendoza, Argentina. The exact dates of the matches in October are yet to be confirmed.
