Madison de Rozario named 2021 WA Sports Star of the Year
WAIS graduate Madison de Rozario becomes first para athlete to be named WA Sports Star of the Year, following a successful Paralympic campaign.
The Western Australian born de Rozario claimed two gold at the Tokyo Games with a stellar performance on the track winning the T53 800m before adding the T54 Marathon on the road to her name. She also claimed bronze in the T54 1500m.
Following the Games de Rozario won the 2021 New York City Marathon Women’s Wheelchair Race, becoming the first Australian woman to win the New York Marathon.
De Rozario beat out a strong field including fellow WAIS scholarship holders or graduates Peter Bol, Sam Kerr, Minjee Lee, Aran Zalewski, Annabelle McIntyre, Matt Wearn and Ben Popham and other WA stars Kiara Bowers, Liam Hendriks and Mitch Marsh.
Scholarship holders Taylah Cruttenden, Ruth Aryang and Iona Anderson were nominated for Junior Sport Star of the Year.
