The Matildas and Olyroos are off to a winning start at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games with wins over New Zealand and Argentina respectively.
On Wednesday, WAIS graduate Sam Kerr captained the Matildas victory to a 2-1 win over New Zealand
A deft touch from Sam Kerr onto Tamika Yallop who found the back of the net to take the Matildas 1-0 up in the first 20 minutes. Less than 15 minutes later a header from Kerr added another and saw them finish the half with a commanding lead.
A number of chances presented themselves and nearly saw Kerr add a second gold. With a 2-0 lead the win seemed sealed, before New Zealand’s Gabi Rennie set up a nervous few minutes but the Matildas held on for a well-deserved win.
Up against the football powerhouses Argentina, the Olyroos were facing a tough challenge.
It took the Olyroos less than 15 minutes to score, in what was their first Game at the Olympic Games in 4,726 days, when Lachlan Wales hit the back of the net.
That goal gave Australia the momentum, with several chances going begging. A late goal to Marco Tilio sealed the victory and sent Australia to the top of pool C.
