Medal Success for WA Sailors at Sail Sydney Regatta
WA’s high performance sailors have returned a medal glut from the Sail Sydney campaign which concluded at the Woollahra Sailing Club today.
Matt Wearn was third in the laser class, but first of the competing Australians after closing his campaign on 20 points.
Wearn finished ahead of WA teammate Luke Elliott (27 points) and Tom Burton (42), with the latter enjoying a strong finish to the regatta with a race win and two second place efforts.
In the 470 class, Nia Jerwood and Monique De Vries were the top ranked Australian crew in the female fleet, finishing ahead of Rio Olympians Carrie Smith and Jaime Ryan. Orla Mulholland-Patterson and her skipper Sophie McIntosh were third of the Australian crews.
Chris Charlwood and his crew Josh Dawson were fourth overall and second Australian, finishing behind Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan.
Jacinta Ainsworth (second) and Zoe Thomson (sixth) both enjoyed strong campaigns in the laser radial, which was won by Marlena Berzins.
WA sailor David Gilmour and Joel Turner claimed the overall victory in the 49er class, with WA’s Lachlan Gilmour and Ryan Donaldson in eighth place and fourth of the competing Australian crews.
Ella Clark crewing for Amelia Stabback took third place and second of the Aussie crews in the 49erFX, whilst Caitlin Elks and Hayley Clark were sixth.
WA sailor Conor Nicholas withdrew from the Narca 17 class through injury. He was racing with Alex South.
