Parker Wins Gold at Boxam International in Spain
Boxer Caitlin Parker has completed a successful European tour with victory at the Boxam International meet in Spain.
Fighting in the women’s 75kg class, Parker had two bouts, and won both fights unanimously 5:0 on the judges’ scorecards.
With three entrants in the weight class in Castellon, Parker was first pitted again Spaniard Patricia Martin Cabrera in a direct semi-final.
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games silver medallist proved too good for the home nation fighter and set-up a gold medal bout with Hungary’s Timea Nagy.
Nagy had received a bye – progressing direct to the final, but Parker once again outshone her opponent to record a strong victory with plenty of clean strikes to impress the judges.
Three scored it 27:30 to Parker, another scored it 26:30 for Parker whilst one judge had it scored closer at 28:29 in favour of the West Australian.
Parker’s tour netted her three medals from as many competitions over six weeks. This included two gold and a silver as she builds towards a planned debut appearance for Australia at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Remarkably, Parker’s impressive form follows seven months out of the ring – before the European tour – as she worked back to peak fitness following surgery to remove her appendix in the second half of 2018.
She will next face-off against the best of Australia’s pugilists, when she contests the Elite Australian Championships in Melbourne, starting June 20.
