Western Australian Institute of Sport kayaking pair Jesse Phillips and Stephen Bird have continued their successful world trip, this time claiming victory in South Africa.

Phillips (Rivervale) and Bird (Mount Pleasant) carried on their winning ways in South Africa on the weekend with a win in the Speedy Jock Classens race over 18km of flowing river and rapids.

The race is a good warm up for the Fish River Marathon in a week’s time and the boys showed good form by accounting for several established South African crews.

In more positive news, Jesse Phillips has capped off a stellar year by being named Canoe WA Senior Paddler of the Year over the weekend.

WAIS coach Ramon Andersson said it was a nice reward for all the hard work Phillips had put in over the past 12 months.
