Western Australian Institute of Sport athlete Jaime Roberts has contested the first ICF Sprint Canoe World Cup for 2014, finishing seventh as a member of the Australian women’s K4 500m event.
With the opening World Cup of the 2014 International season held in Milan, Roberts teamed with the NSW duo of Jo Brigden-Jones and Naomi Flood along with Queensland’s Bernadette Wallace to finish 2.624 seconds behind the winning crew from China who crossed the line in 1:35.590.
The World Cup series next moves to the Czech Republic where the city of Racice will play host to World Cup 2. Roberts will be joined by her WAIS training partners Jesse Phillips, Stephen Bird and Brodie Holmes.
The 200m specialists departed Perth this week to join up with the Australian squad and will compete in Racice from May 16-18 before heading for World Cup 3, in Szeged, Hungary (May 23-25).
Dual National Champion Alana Nicholls had been due to travel with the team, but has opted to stay home in Perth to rest a neck muscle ailment, in a bid to be fully fit for this year’s World Championships in Russia from August 6-10.
