Queensland based WA triathlete Jaz Hedgeland has enjoyed a successful start to her 2017 season with a victory at the Queensland TriSeries event in Robina last weekend.
With two races contested comprising a 400m swim, 9.4km bike and a 2.5km run, athletes were ranked on their overall time at the culmination of the second race.
21 year-old Hedgeland out sprint former Under 23 World Championship silver medallist and first race winner Gillian Backhouse in the second event to win overall by 14 seconds on combined times with fellow Queenslander Holly Grice returning to form with an encouraging third.
Hedgeland and Grice finished first and second respectively in the under 23s with Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Brittany Dutton third.
Having trailed by a handful of seconds after finishing behind Backhouse in the opening race, Hedgeland saved her best for last, launching a surge in the closing stages of the run leg to take the race win and aggregate title.
Hedgeland’s final combined time stopped the clock at 1:00.18hours.
WA Paralympian Brant Garvey made a triumphant return from an injury he sustained in Rio last September to win the PT2 classification in Robina.
Garvey has been on the rehab trail since aggravating an adductor on his left leg, with the win in Queensland his first competition for the year.
Garvey crossed the finish line in 1:18.51.
