WAIS graduate Sam Kerr has become Australia’s leading Olympic goal scorer after finding the net twice against Sweden.

Up against world number three and Rio silver medallists, the Matildas had to be at the top of their game to take their second win of the tournament. A closely matched first half with two goals a piece saw scores level and high hopes for the second half.

Captain Kerr again showed why she is one of the top players in the world at both ends of the field finding the net twice, while also keeping Sweden on their toes in the centre and defence.

Kerr who claimed a hatrick in Rio was close to repeating the feat again, when awarded a penalty. Only some spectular goal keeping stopped the ball finding the net.

The final 30 minutes saw Sweden out perform the Matildas for a 4-2 win. Australia now face reigning champions United States on Tuesday.

“I thought we dominated for most of the game and really only three opportunities where we let them get in to it and then we missed one myself,” said Kerr. “At the end of the last we lost so it’s disappointing but the first 60 minutes really proud performance against a top team.”
