WAIS athlete Brendon Sarson (Balcatta) had a very strong paddle tofinish eighth in the “Doctor” World Cup Ocean Race on the weekend.

Originally scheduled for Rottnest to Scarborough, the course was changed from Port Beach to Rottnest a distance of 25km; due to the strong easterly winds which provided excellent downwind conditions for the race.

The event enjoyed one of the most competitive races ever in its fledgling history. Sarson’s time of 1 hour 14 min and 20 seconds was only 1:56mins behind race winner Dawid Mocke from South Africa.

Sarson backed up on the following day to take fourth place with partner Mark Anderson in the Finn Kayaks Coastal Challenge a relay event from Port Beach to Sorrento with a change over at City Beach.

The event was won by Jeremy Cotter of Australia who is one of the top couple of ocean racers in the World and Hank McGregor from South Africa a former World Marathon Kayak paddler.

This weekend will see WAIS athletes competing in the next round of the Surf Lifesaving Premiership Series in Bunbury on Saturday and the Claisebrook Marathon Race over 13km on Sunday.
