Last weekend’s Bay to Beach paddle saw WAIS sparring partners produce a heart stopping finish to the line.
WAIS athletes and training partners Reece Baker (Marmion) and Brendon Sarson (Karrinyup) went head to head in the annual paddle over 17km from Mosman Bay, past the North Mole and finishing with a sprint up Cottesloe Beach.
In a race that went to the wire it was Sarson who prevailed in a neck and neck finish, reversing the result from the previous week at the National Selection Regatta where Baker narrowly edged Sarson in another tight finish.
This weekend will see about half of the WAIS squad fly to the first Grand Prix of the season in Adelaide where Sarson and Baker will look to carry on their good early season form not only in K1 but paddling together in the K2 1000m.
Fellow WAIS scholarship holders Daniel Bowker (Kingsley) and Brodie Holmes showed encouraging signs at the selection regatta a fortnight ago and will look to consolidate this weekend.
Libby Le Coultre (Inglewood) did not attend the National Selection regatta but has shown some good improvements over the last month and will be looking for a strong showing in Adelaide.
