Seven WAIS athletes selected to Australian Rowing Team for 2022 World Cups
Seven WAIS scholarship holders and graduates have been selected in the Australian Rowing Team to compete at the World Rowing Cups in Belgrade (SRB), Poznan (POL) and Lucerne (SUI).
Tokyo Olympians Annabelle McIntyre, Bronwyn Cox, Giorgia Patten and Jack Cleary have been joined by Sam Marsh and two young rising stars Gen Hart and Jacqueline Swick in debut selections.
McIntyre who became the first Western Australian to win an Olympic gold medal in rowing in joined in the women’s sweep squad by Tokyo teammates Cox and Patten and Hart and Swick.
Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Cleary has been selected in the men’s double scull. While Marsh forms part of the men’s coxed eight squad.
Rowing Australia Performance Director Paul Thompson said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate this group of athletes who have been selected to represent Australia at the 2022 World Rowing Cups. We look forward to seeing what this Australian Rowing Team can achieve in the months ahead. Outside of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, this will be the first time since 2019 that Rowing Australia has sent a full-strength team to international competition.
“This team announcement follows a week of rigorous selection trials that were moved from Sydney to Canberra due to the extreme weather experienced in the Penrith region of Western Sydney. More than 80 athletes were put through their paces over the course of the week.”
