Western Australia’s women’s U21 side have claimed a silver medal at the 2016 Championships in Sydney after a 2-1 defeat against Queensland in the final.

WA put up a spirited effort in a closely fought final but trailed to Renee Taylor and Ambrosia Malone goals shortly after half-time, before finding a way back into the contest through a Brooke Capewell strike.

Despite attempts at both ends, neither side could find another goal and the match ended in a one goal victory to Queensland.

The bronze medal was won by NSW, who claimed a shoot-out victory over Victoria following an entertaining 3-3 draw, in which the hosts fought back from a 3-0 half time deficit.

Western Australia’s men’s U21 team missed out on a medal after falling the wrong side of a seven goal thriller in their bronze medal play-off with Queensland.

In a match that ebbed and flowed, WA took the lead through Liam Flynn, only to see their rivals strike back to lead 2-1. WA again wrestled an advantage through goals to Simon Benetti and Alex Rasmussen, which appeared to have the team on course for a win, before Oliver Crane scored his second for Queensland, followed by a match winner to Mackenzie Warne shortly after.

Victoria claimed the men’s gold medal, earning a 2-0 win over New South Wales.
