Stingers Blunted in US Hitout
The Australian Stingers have suffered an 11-5 defeat against rivals USA in their second of three practice matches in California.
With the Australians using the series as preparation for the World League Super Final in China, from June 7-11, the group was put on notice by a powerful performance from their hosts at both ends of the pool.
The Stingers were caught cold in the opening term, outscored three goals to none, before reaching the half-time break at a 5-1 with plenty to do. Despite a better showing in the second half, the US edged further ahead to eventually secure a six goal win.
The Australians were thwarted by an impressive performance from American goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson who produced 13 saves over the course of the match to put the hosts in a position of strength, particularly as Australia created six more scoring opportunities than their opponent for the match.
US star Maddie Musselman ensured Johnson’s form wasn’t wasted, converting three goals for the hosts, whilst Maggie Steffens and Mackenzie Fischer chipped in with two goals each in support.
WAIS scholarship athlete Glencora McGhie scored for the Australians and was joined in the squad by fellow Western Australians Gemma Beadsworth and Zoe Arancini.
After a narrow 14-11 defeat in the first clash, the Aussies will play one further match this Friday before turning their attention to World League.
The tournament in China is the final major competition for the Australians before they confirm their squad of 13 athletes for August’s Olympic Games in Rio.
