Stingers Edge Russia to Make Winning Start at World League Super Final
The Australian Stingers have won their opening match at the World League Super Final in China, after edging past Russia for an 11-10 win.
Western Australian athletes Glencora McGhie (three) and Zoe Arancini (two) combined for five of Australia’s goals, whilst dual Olympic medallist Gemma Beadsworth was also in action for the Aussies.
NSW’s Bronte Halligan scored a last minute winner for the Aussies, against an adversary it is scheduled to face in the pool round of August’s Olympic Games in Rio.
Top scorer McGhie said the Australians had their work cut-out against a well drilled Russian outfit.
“It was a really tough game. The Russians are really good at counter attack and they did capitalise on our lapses in defence.
“But we managed to sneak through with a win which is an exciting way to kick start the Tournament,” McGhie said.
The Stingers next face hosts China, with the World League Super Final, the last major tournament for the Australians before the 2016 Olympic Games.
